A Handyman Helps Homes Change For Seasons

Winterizing the home can be done in the late fall and undone in spring. It takes time, skill and patience. This is a job that might best be left to a handyman.

Windows

Changing up or replacing windows may seem like a simple task, until the amount of time it takes is multiplied by 15 or 20 in a home. Even for homes with double glazing, it can be done for less money and is easily transferrable. A layer of clear plastic film can also be added to winterize a home or use 1/8-inch Plexiglas.

Storm Doors

Storm doors and windows are energy saving and help reduce utility bills. They can be heavy and cumbersome to install in the winter. Use a handyman service or contractor professional to manage the change instead. The storm door may need replacing altogether, or it can be adjusted with a replaceable screen door. Some doors have both screens and solid window panels that slide up and down. In pleasant weather, storm doors should be traded out with screen doors or panels exchanged or moved. On nice days, open them up to allow fresh air into the house and turn off the air conditioning and heating.

Door Replacement

Even the best quality storm door can come apart after daily use and abuse, especially with children running in and out at full force. Glass cracks and breaks. Panels can be difficult to replace, especially for someone who has never done it before. Even with new, lightweight Plexiglas, the panels can be heavy and cumbersome to work with. This is an ideal project for an experienced handyman. Rather than wrestling with the door, it is a quick and easy replacement once measurements have been taken. For those without time, however, it can simply be a nuisance that is pushed aside or forgotten altogether.

Screens

Screen replacement in spring and summer requires nimble fingers and know-how. One tell-tale sign of having many children in a home is the corner of the screen hanging off the door. In some cases, it may be a simple matter of replacing the spline. After multiple replacements, however, the whole section of screen needs to be redone. This involves removing the old piece, cutting out a new screen and installing it. While not difficult, it can be time consuming, especially when other things are pressing.

Hinges

With wear and tear comes powerful force on the hinges. With too much force, a door can come right out of the frame. At the very least, it may be pulled just enough to close at an angle that prevents it from closing normally. This becomes a safety hazard. A professional may need to replace not only the bent door hinges, but also the frame to which it is attached.
