Tips For Vertical Blinds in Angled Top Windows

Anytime you have an angled top window, it poses a difficulty when ordering horizontal or vertical blinds and shades. While some manufactures make angled head rails to help out with the problem, you do have other options to consider. Here we will discuss some options and give you some tips on getting the proper fit.

Guide to Measuring Angled Top Windows

1. Measure the width of the window frame.
2. When measuring the angle top for blinds or any other window treatment, you will want to take three separate measurements.
*a. Measure the width from the bottom.
*b. Measure the width from middle.
*c. Measure the width from the top.
3. Measure the height of the window.
*a. Measure from the bottom of the window all the way to the start of the angled top
*b. This means you will NOT measure the angle portion of the window.
*c. This measurement is the HEIGHT of you blinds.

Guide to Mounting the Vertical Blinds

1. First, make sure you have side mount brackets. You will need these to properly fit the window.
2. Attach the brackets to the window frame.
*a. Attach the brackets to the sides.
*b. Attach the bracket to the shorter side first, just where the angle starts.
*c. Attach the other bracket directly across from the shorter bracket.
*d. Use a level to make sure the brackets are installed at a level height.
*e. This will keep your head rail level.

Exposed Area of Window

In most cases, the top portion of the window is high enough that you can leave it uncovered and still maintain your privacy. However, you do not have to leave it uncovered.

Some companies offer a cut piece to fit the exposed area. The top covering can be matched to meet the same fabric, wood, aluminum or what have you, to the original vertical blinds. When the exposed spot is big enough, this can create a beautiful design. However, it will not open.

This option is especially useful and decorative for windows that are not angled but arched instead. Oftentimes, you can get a fan like effect over the blinds, which really set off the look and feel of the window.

If you have concerns about how to measure or what would look best then contact the company. A customer service representative should be able to answer all your questions.

Privacy Window Films

One of the most popular options is the solar control window films. The solar control window film is basically a tinted privacy window film that does more than just give you privacy. It provides more than safety in your home or office as well. This type of privacy window film is scratch resistant, so it stands up to the weather and the children; it protects furniture from fading by rejecting 99% of the sun's ultraviolet rays, so this is a great investment because it means you won't have to purchase new furniture due to sun fading. Solar control window films also fight glare while allowing sunlight through the window, but with less of the sun's heat. They reflect the heat back to its source, which saves on summer cooling costs and winter heating bills. They provide you with privacy during the day, even with your drapes open which equals reduced lighting bills. In other words, not only do you save money by purchasing solar control window films, you protect your furniture, watch tv without a glare, and get the convenience of privacy without the hassle of drapes and blinds.

One of the big benefits of privacy window films is that depending on which brand and grade you get they are nearly invisible on your window, yet it blocks half the heat and 99% of the UV that causes fading. Most are designed to do the following:

Stained Glass - A History

No one really knows when stained glass was first invented because it happened before people really recorded history. However, some historians think that it was first used as an extravagance in the homes of affluent Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was eventually acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians began to worship candidly and to build elaborate churches in which to observe their religion.

On the other hand, other historians demonstrate that there are remnants in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans employed such glass in their rites. Although we will probably never really learn the start of this glass, it is fairly certain that the spread of Christianity is immediately connected with the spread of use of stained glass.

The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an essential aspect in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the novel style of the St. Denis Cathedral in France, where stained glass windows were employed to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Unfortunately, most of the glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed during the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some complete windows on display in Europe.

Gothic style picture glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of fashion as the Renaissance commenced. Throughout the Renaissance, artisans depicted greater detail and more subtle colouring in order to add to the realism. Windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural elements and some of the notable elements such as lead lines disappeared. Because of the difficulties in showing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was true way of staining glass, almost died out.

Since this way of staining glass was used by and large by the Catholic Church, a great deal of the work was smashed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his split with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were damaged, but many of the glass making works were sabotaged too. However, religious strife was not the only cause of the decline of this type of glass.

The fashion of the Baroque period was for more detailed murals, which meant the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were permitted to fall into disrepair, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were made. In the late 17th century, fashion returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed fascination in staining glass windows.

Artisans still tried to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval days. However, since the original techniques had not been used for such a long time, they had become forgotten and the artisans of the time were unable to reconstruct the exact designs used in Gothic glass.

In the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new variations of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new fields like the Tiffany lamp shade.

Nowadays, stained glass makers are not limited by religious doctrines, although much of the work they do involves restoration. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

Rack Up the Benefits With a New Set of Windows

A common project when it comes to home improvements is replacing windows and doors in a property in order to clean up and refresh the look of a building that perhaps needs a facelift.

New windows and doors really can make all the difference and make attractive features, but they can also do a whole lot more. Everyone is aware of climate change and the effect it is having on the planet and a lot of people have changed their lifestyles in recent years in order to minimise their effect on the Earth and reduce their carbon footprint.

Changing the windows and doors in your house to energy efficient models can help. Through installing double glazed windows, it is possible to cut the amount of heat that escapes from your windows by 50 per cent, meaning you need to use less energy to heat your house. Not only are you saving money, but you're also helping to do your bit for the environment.

Double paned windows work by using two panes of glass instead of one. Between these layers, there is air which acts as a layer of insulation, helping to prevent heat escaping through the window. It can also help cut down on noise coming into the house and prevent condensation.

According to the National Fenestration Rating Council, an average American household spends over 40 per cent of its annual energy budget on heating and cooling costs. However, in most homes this figure could be reduced by up to 15 per cent through installing more energy efficient windows.

The council said: "If all residential windows in the U.S. were replaced with the more efficient Energy Star qualifying models, we'd save $7 billion in energy costs over the next 15 years - enough to light every home in the New York City metropolitan area."

Attaching a replacement door to the front of your property can also help keep energy loss to a minimum if you ensure it has a proper seal with the frame to maximise insulation.

Door Replacement Windows

There a number of repairs and parts replacements that homeowners can do themselves to avoid paying very high prices for professional work done on their house. One of these is replacing the sliding glass doors found in most houses. Replacing sliding glass doors involves a number of steps that a homeowner who wishes to replace them must follow. If you find yourself as one of those "do it yourself" home owners, then here are a few useful tips you can use.

The process

The first you have to do is to measure the dimensions of your sliding door and to make sure that the door that you want to replace it with is has the same dimensions. Measuring will involve that you measure across the bottom, the center and the top of your doorframe. After getting accurate measurements of your sliding door based on the measurements of your doorframe, you can now determine which side the sliding panel should be placed. You can do this by looking at some of the labeling placed on your sliding door, for the fixed door panel, the marking that you will find is the letter "O," while for the sliding panel, you will find the letter "X."

Frames

The next thing that you need to determine is to decide on the type of frame that you will want for your sliding door. You have a choice between retrofit frames, which are most appropriate if you find that the old frame is flush with the exterior material and replacement frames, which are usually used if you have brick or siding at the opening of the door. However, in using replacement frames, you may have to do some trimming work to be able to install your new sliding doors, which are usually made of vinyl.

Putting in the new door

Being able to decided on the things mentioned above will enable you to look for a replacement sliding door that is appropriate to your needs. If in case you find yourself doing some trimming work on the door, it would be a good idea to do this even before the replacement door arrives. It is also a good idea to have all the tools that you will need, which includes caulk, insulation, liquid nails, screws, dust masks and safety glasses so that when the new door arrives you can finish the job in no time.

Spicing Up Your Home Office Decor

Not only are more people working for themselves these days, many companies are discovering that having employees work from home is an efficient way to do business. To make sure you home office is conductive to work, there are a few simple touches you can do to liven up the environment while maintaining professionalism. Instead of a stagnant office, try to make your decor refreshing and in harmony with the rest of your home.

Try a monochrome color that you like. A monochrome theme provides a focused work style environment with a stylish appearance. Clean lines with bold injections of black or white is the new chic. It is important for your office to be integrated, but it should also feel like a place for work, not living. A alternate color style creates a separating mood between the office and home. Try some professional-looking wood blinds in the home office. No longer only for the film noir detective, modern wood blinds can come in any color or style to match your office. Wood blinds reek of success.

For a cheaper alternative, roller blinds can be used to regulate the optimum amount of light entering the workplace. Blinds especially reduce glare on sunny days. Venetian blinds can be tilted to according to the amount of light you want to enter the room. Venetian and roller blinds also come in colors, as well as black and white to match the monochrome effect. Inspirational artwork is also a good idea. Now, pictures can even be printed on roller or wood blinds. A picture of a serene outdoor setting can help alleviate claustrophobia, and allow for mini daydream breaks throughout the day.

A study, on the other hand, is less formal than the home office. It can be a place to entertain either guests or clients. The classic study look is leather chairs and wooden furniture, warm lighting and curtains to create an intimate location. Warm hardwood blinds, perhaps stained in cherry help complete the study. Wood flooring is another step that will make the room seem warm in winter. Wood is actually also a good insulator, so hardwood floors and blinds will also keep the study cool in summer. Study decoration is in marked contrast to the uniform office. A study is often a hectic collection of personally selected objects that are somehow unified by the force of the occupant. Don't feel strange about leaving a pile of books around. Distractions are good in a study. They give easy conversation points, or just something for your kids to mess with instead of you. Large bamboo blinds look fresh. The days of a fireplace are gone in most locations, but warm tones and conservative artwork replicate the ambiance of the traditional study.

Home offices often use a converted loft, garage or addition to the house. This offers the perfect chance to create your own world in the office or study. Surround yourself in the perfect environment and watch the work fly by.

Hunter Douglas Blinds vs Levolor - A Brand Battle Royale

The company I work for recently conducted some focus groups to determine brand awareness of our website and company as well as the brands that we carry. Now, I was not necessarily surprised that no one knew our company name but what did surprise me is that only one person in two focus group sessions, totaling about 20 people, could name a brand of window treatments. That company was Hunter Douglas which happens to be the biggest manufacturer of window treatments on the planet. They are headquartered in the Netherlands and have annual sales well over 2 billion dollars.

Now, I realize that a sample size of 20 people is not large but it still surprises me how little attention and awareness there is of this facet of consumer goods. We almost all have some kind of window treatments in our houses. Just so you know there are many other brand names, there's Levolor, Bali, Kirsch, Graber, Comfortex and a few others.

What is it in the nature of window treatments that is so forgettable? I do have theories. First, and most importantly, window blinds, et al are a very infrequent purchase. You could purchase blinds for your house and not think about them again for years and years. Your infant child could be out of high school before you considered redecorating. Secondly, I believe that people do not have an emotional attachment to window treatment brands. There is no, "keeping up with the Jones'" aspect. It is not like your neighbor is going to notice that you bought a set of brand new Bali aluminum mini blinds for your living room and be envious. Your neighbor might not even notice and if he/she did, the conversation would not be about the brand. It would only be a simple acknowledgment of something new within your home.

Let's take this analogy a step further with a comparison of another infrequent purchase, automobiles. On average people buy a new car roughly every 3-5 years. The automobile industry has done a much better job of branding and selling an emotional attachment to their products. Think back to the "keeping up with the Jones'" analogy. I bought a new car a few months ago and my neighbors went out of their way to compliment me. I feel good driving around in my brand-name car. It tells people that, "yes, I make decent money," whether that's true or not. I bought new window treatments for my house and I don't think any one even noticed.

If I were the marketing manager for, let's say Hunter Douglas, I would spend a lot more money on branding. I would work to create an emotional attachment to the cache of owning their brand of window treatments. In the end, if consumers do not have an emotional attachment to a brand, especially with regards to something like window treatments, there will be little or no loyalty and catch-as-catch-can sales. I would work to make my brand the must-have, make-my-neighbors-covet my brand name window blinds. Then the next time your neighbor comes for a visit, he/she will say, "Are those the new Levolor pleated shades? I heard about these, they are nice! I gotta get me some of those."

Decorating Ideas With Window Treatments

Whether your dream room is formal and filled with fabulous antiques or if it is cozy and sporting worn leather, you can complete the vision with carefully planned window treatments. Privacy, protection from the sun and energy efficiency rank high on the list of consumer needs for their windows. Blinds and shutters will provide this practical layer of window treatments. Purchase the best that your budget will allow because constant opening and closing will wear on the mechanisms that work these coverings.

Let the (Partial) Sun Shine In
Often we want to enjoy the sun streaming into our home or the view of the trees outside our window but we still want the privacy of a covered window. The solution is installing shades with the top down/bottom up feature. Simply put, they can be lifted from the bottom to give a view of the outside world but still allowing the lower half of the window to be covered. When privacy is not a concern, they can be used as traditional horizontal blinds.

Top Down / Bottom Up Shades
I recommend these for your office or media room because they will minimize the glare on your computer or television while maintaining a well lit room. Do not underestimate the damage sun can do to your home and furnishings. Window film can also be used to control the harmful UV rays that will fade your flooring, furniture and artwork. This coating placed directly on the window panes will block out the heat and deflect glare while allowing sunlight to safely come through the window. You can purchase do it yourself kits or have it professional done.

Clothes For Your Windows
Now it is time to think about the fun layer of window dressing. A room looks complete when you add great treatments. What is the style of your room? What will it look like from the outside? Do you want them stationary or functional?

Panels
Panels are as popular now as when your mother was decorating her home. The difference is the variety in headers.

* Grommets create a modern vibe. The panel has metal rings along the top that threads on to your rod. They look best when used in areas they can remain stationary.

* Pinch pleats are strong in the custom treatment business. The most popular look is to hang them from metal or wooden rings. This look works well if you want to open and close your curtains often.

* Tab tops are fun for casual rooms. The tabs can be of different colors, have added buttons or be adorned with tassels. They should be used on windows that you do not need to close the curtains.

Valances
Valances are strong in window treatment decor. They add a finished look over your blinds by hiding the mechanical header. Hang them high enough so that they cover the top casing but they do not block the sun streaming into your window. There are so many styles of valances from box pleats to swags. Let your fabric design and the style of your room guide you on choosing the perfect valance.

Enter The Romans
My young clients seem to be drawn to roman shades. They can be easily lower when privacy is needed. When raised, they create a tailored look that works well in so many homes. They look great in a crisp cotton as well as a raw silk.

Window Treatment Crazy? Seek Professional Help
If you have a hard time visualizing the end results, choosing decorative window treatments can be daunting. A designer specializing in windows will take you step by step through the process. They will give you access to resources (fabrics, hardware, specialized blinds) that you would not be able to buy at your local big box store. They will also help protect you from costly mistakes. What kind of window treatments do I have in my upstairs office? Well, looking at my windows I see delicate wispy strands of silk like material. Even though the design is intricate and somewhat pretty, I think it is time to knock those spider webs down! Until next time, enjoy more decorating ideas and video at my site below.

Get Double Glazing Installed and Not Only Save Money But Help Save the Planet

Whenever you open the local newspaper the obligatory flyers usually fall out, sometimes including an advert from the neighbourhood's window installation company. If we are all honest it usually ends up in the bin and we don't read to find out how it could actually benefit us. Well it's time that you did because uPVC double glazed windows could be one of the wisest purchases you ever make.

By having double glazed windows installed you are actually doing your bit to save the planet as it helps lessen the carbon footprint of your property as you will be burning less fuel. The reason being is that single glazed windows lose twice as much heat as a double glazed window. A double glazed window retains heat within the home and is better for insulation, so it also helps you to cut your heating bills.

Not just that but double glazed windows can also get rid of condensation and reduce the amount of outside noise that comes into your home. It can also help deter burglars as a single pane window is a much easier target for the clever intruder as it is simpler to break into, so they can provide your home with the upmost security. As well as being extremely easy to maintain and guaranteed to last for years to come, if the time does ever come when you want to sell up, double glazing is a great draw to home buyers.

Remember that double glazing is a long term investment and you should always make sure that you buy a style which is most suited to your home. Also make sure you check what type of locking mechanism the window has as you don't want it to be flimsy and easily breakable.

A New Look For Your Home With Blinds

When considering window treatments, the trend has been to consider and eventually go for blinds and shades instead of curtains and draperies. There have been two main reasons why curtains and draperies have declined in popularity, to the advantage of blinds and shades. For practical reasons, curtains and draperies have been relegated to second choice. They are simply difficult to maintain and it is a task to keep them clean.

Furthermore, since they are made out of cloth, they tend to absorb all smells present in the room. Thus, they need to be laundered every so often, especially if they are in rooms where tobacco smoke is present. Also, they look bulky and make the whole room feel stuffy. With climate change gearing towards extreme conditions, curtains and draperies tend to look out of place especially during very hot summers. Curtain window treatments are still certainly favored for rooms that need to exude a stately and formal image. The trend with designing living spaces these days would be to make areas warm yet casual, well put together yet a bit quirky, and elegant yet cozy. Thus, blinds have taken over as the window treatment of choice among more homes these days.

When shopping for blinds, you may be the kind of shopper who focuses first on aesthetics rather than technical aspects like measurements and quality of stitching. If you are the aesthetic-conscious kind of shopper, you need to make sure that you will incorporate the design theme of the entire space. Blinds can be a good unifying piece to put together the colors and textures of the decorative pieces in a room. But after considering the look of the blinds, make sure that you also get the blind with the right measurement. You would not want to install blinds that are too long or too short for your window.

When getting the perfect blinds for your home, look for something that would be reasonably priced. If your budget allows you to go with an expensive product, then by all means, try to buy it. Otherwise, you need to remember that, just like with other things, you get what you pay for. Cheap blinds may only last you for a couple of years, and eventually, the colors may get tarnished, or some of the parts may come off.

Moreover, blinds that are too cheap may be difficult to install and may unravel anytime. But you do not need to worry as even blinds of the highest quality are still more affordable even when compared to other window treatments like draperies and curtains. As they are quite affordable, you may even afford to buy two sets so that you can change the treatment of your window, for example, once a year.

There are so many different blinds made out of a lot of different materials - bamboo, plastic, fabric, reed, and wood among others. Choose from these materials to make your blinds blend with the theme of the room you are going to install them on.

How to Find Cheap Blinds

When it's time to start decorating, you need to make a decision about window coverings. You have many choices of coverings including shades, draperies and blinds. The cost of some of these items may be exorbitant not only for each blind but also multiplied by the number of windows you have in your home or apartment. Window coverings are an excellent opportunity for you to trim your decorating budget and save some money. The fabrication of window blinds in different materials; colors, shapes and sizes are now mass-produced so that their cost is nominal. The word cheap is not as correct as inexpensive. Finding inexpensive but nice looking elegant blinds will result in a substantial cost savings.

A good place to start your search is your local retail or home store. You can actually see samples of different types of window blinds, materials and colors. You can write down the approximate cost of the blinds which interest you. Next you can search the Internet. There are a voluminous number of companies which sell blinds of all kinds. You can compare the prices from your local shops to the Internet suppliers. There is no need to order the same blind for every room. You can personalize each room and style of décor with a different type of blind. Just a few examples of types of blinds are cordless blinds, metal blinds, bamboo blinds, cellular shade blinds, mini blinds, metal blinds and aluminum blinds. Each type has positives and negatives. Bamboo blinds are Eco friendly since it is the fastest growing plant in the world. They clean easy and are long lasting. Cellular shades give a modern look to most rooms and come in various sizes and shapes. Vertical blinds are a very popular choice for both large and small windows since they can be cut to any size. Roman and Venetian blinds can add panache and style to bedrooms and living rooms.

The multitude of colors, styles, shapes and sizes are only limited by your imagination. The low cost of blinds today mean that although you can purchase aluminum blinds which are likely the most popular inexpensive make, you can certainly find alternatives. The competition in this area if substantial benefiting you as the consumer. The availability of blinds not only in your local stores but also through the Internet means you can comparison show for sale prices and low prices from a variety to suppliers. Inexpensive blinds do not have to look cheap with the quality and availability of blinds today.

Double Glazing to Stop Christmas Freeze Up

The cold, wintery weather affects everything and as such we need to make sure we do all we can in order to prevent our Christmas's from being frosty. The perfect way to make sure the heat stays in our home is to get double glazing installed. Double glazing is being advised for everyone as they are the best way to keep your home nice and warm as the temperatures continue to drop. There probably would not be many complaints if the snow was coming down and we were to have a white Christmas but the snow looks increasingly likely to be replaced with wind and rain.

The problem at this time of year is that draughts and unsuitably fixed doors and windows will become more apparent and this will lead to the heat from your home seeping out. With double glazing you can at least eliminate the problems of heat escaping through your windows as the double framed technology used traps the heat in and forms a barrier.

Not losing as much heat means your home stays warmer for longer and you will not have to put the heating on as frequently. This is good news for all homeowners as we are all looking for ways to save money on our household bills. Utility bills are certainly a major problem and as they continue to rise, all homeowners should be taking advantage of the long term benefits of double glazing. Despite the original cost of the work, all homeowners will see a huge return as utility bills start to decrease month on month.

Looking for double glazing and searching for the best prices is not always the easiest so shop online where there are some great deals available. There are a range of styles available that will match the design of all houses but make sure you pick one that matches the style of your house or they will look out of place.

Having double glazing installed also adds value to your house as it shows that utility bills will be lower and also they are a form of added security as they are nigh on impossible to break into to. Double glazing can keep you safe and warm this Christmas as well as saving you money on bills, leaving you more money to spend on Christmas presents.

Quality Shutters

Since the early Seventeen Hundreds shutters have been used on American homes. The shutters were then used primarily to ward off thieves and to protect the home and family from inclement or harsh weather. Today, in some areas where weather is still inclement and tends to be disastrous, shutters are still used to protect the house and family. But, in areas of the country where the weather is not quite as harsh shutters are used for their aesthetic value. Whatever your choice of shutters for your home, arm yourself with enough knowledge about the materials that shutters are made from and their styles in order to get the best quality shutters.

Whether you want your shutters to have aesthetic value and to be stationary, or if you want them to serve the purpose for which they were designed, you want to get the highest quality shutters to withstand the elements as well as the test of time. Shutters can elegantly tell the world what style your house was built in and if it is an authentic period house, proper style shutters will make that statement. You only want to make the house look better by adding shutters to it then it will have what the real estate people like to call "curb appeal" making it more saleable when the time comes.

As in all things we place on or in our houses, we want them to last and look good over the years with normal wear and tear. Quality in style, material and workmanship is the answer and quality shutters on the windows of your home are imperative. For the best in quality having your shutters custom made is best. It's the difference between buying clothes off the rack and having them custom made to fit. You can hide the lesser quality of clothes but not the lesser quality of your shutters. The better the materials and the better the fit the more beautiful the shutters and the more aesthetically pleasing the house. However, do not confuse high price for high quality they do not always relate.

Fixing Sash Windows That Are Painted Shut

Sash Window painted shut?

Traditional sash windows seem to have become a double-edged sword in the UK. Home owners want to keep them but no longer have the knowledge or the skills to maintain them. Sash windows will almost always be original to the property. Over time, cords will have broken, Sashes will have been painted shut and the overall effect is a tatty, non-working window which begs the question "where do I start?" Perhaps this will help.

An explanation of the sash window and its workings.

A sash window is basically a frame with hollow sides. Inside these sides are weights which are attached via cords or chains, through pulleys, to the sashes. In normal operation, the sashes move up and down and are counterbalanced by the weights via the pulleys.

The sashes are fitted from inside. Upper sash first, then, a parting bead which fits between the sashes and sits in a groove in the side of the frame. Then, the lower sash fits in and finally staff bead is fitted to the inside.

As the upper sash moves up and down it is held in place by the outside face of the frame and the parting bead. The lower sash is held in place by the parting bead and the staff beads.

Simple?

Painted shut Sash windows

If the outside of the window has been painted until the sashes will no longer move (most upper sashes seem to suffer from this) they can be freed-off with a hammer or mallet, decorators scraper and a chisel.

Ensure that whatever lock / catch the window has inside is locked. Then - on the outside, attempt to tap the chisel into the gap between the frame and the upper sash. A few taps up the sides should be sufficient to cause a crack to appear. Then, force the decorating scraper into the gap and attempt to slide it all around the gap between the sash and frame (including across the top). Then check underneath the bottom of the upper sash that there is a gap either side, otherwise - more tapping.

Return inside, check the gap between the parting bead and sash is not painted shut. If it is, hammer your scraper into the gap until the paint cracks between the two. Supporting the sash with one hand, undo the lock and see if the sash will lower. (remember, there are cords in the side which may be broken, you won't know until it's lowered ). If the sash will now wiggle about but wont lower, try carefully levering it downwards with your chisel or scraper jammed between the top and the frame. Use one hand to lever and the other to support the sash, once it moves, assess its tightness.

If its too tight to move freely or the cords are broken the window will need an overhaul. The same process applies to the bottom sash. Outside- between the lower sash and parting bead, inside- between the sash and staff bead. When I get more time, I will explain how to take the sashes out and replace the cords.

How Much Does it Cost to Replace Windows in a House?

When one of my members asked me this question - how much does it cost to replace windows in a house? I told him this is such a broad question it would take me to consider a few issues instead of just providing a one word answer. Below I will provide a very broad but helpful view of this subject - hopefully you will find information that will be helpful to you.

o For a price of about 9 windows you are likely to be quoted something like $5500. You can even get about that much for 6 or 8 windows especially from places like Home Depot.

o There are some companies that will give you a quote of about $8000. I know Sears quoted one of my subscribers about that much.

o You can get one replacement window installed in your house for about $250. You can then multiply from there to total the number of windows in your home. This charge applies to windows that are double pane and you can get some from Andersons.

o The last time I checked ComfortWorld 4000 replacement windows will cost you about $260 to install any size.

o I know that Xact quotes about $6000 for about 12 average siz double hung windows. Xact also gave another member a quote of $1900 for 7 DH windows.

o Estimated prices for wood windows costs between $13000 and 19000 and vinyl will cost you between $6000 and $8000. Of course this varies per number of windows needed.

o It is not unusual to be quoted about $450 per window. I know that some think this price is rather too high.

So I hope I have answered your question on how much does it cost to replace windows in a home. Of course you still need to get your own custom made quote before you start budgeting.
